Looking after the Bowling Club
Every Bowling Club has two major assets – the membership, and the playing green. At Bishopbriggs, we are very fortunate that so many members help on a voluntary basis, maintaining the green, the areas around the green, the clubhouse, and the other buildings.
We employ a contractor (Pro-Turfcare) to do major work on the green, with monthly visits to do the work which requires specialist machinery, etc. and to advise on the day-to-day work which we do ourselves.
However, seven days a week in the playing season, and much of the close season, members give of their time and energy to look after the green, the garden areas, and the property as a whole.
The work starts in Spring, ensuring everything is ready for Opening Day. Throughout the playing season, members cut the green regularly, and for much of the summer, this means cutting at least every second morning. A lot of work goes into keeping the garden areas in excellent condition, cutting the hedges, etc.
Immediately after Closing Day, there is much to be done to clean and store away materials until next spring.
Volunteers are always welcome. There are jobs for every member who might want to help, even such simple things like changing the settings on the green, or just being present when the green is being cut, to ensure nobody is working alone in case of accident.
If you have some spare time, and feel able to volunteer, see Mike Dunbar (Secretary) or any of the Directors. We have a great team of workers (for example, two for every morning to cut the grass) but holidays, illness, etc. can often mean there are gaps to fill. No special expertise is needed.
