Bishopbriggs Bowling Club – The Early Days.
Formed on the 20th April, 1905, Bishopbriggs Bowling Club leased an area on the Kenmure Estate. This ground has been the home of the club from then to this day.
A Chairman, James Forrest, was elected from a group of interested men who …. “thought that a Bowling Green in the district was desirable.”
The green was opened formally on the 30th June, 1906.
In 2006, a Centenary Dinner was held, marking the Club’s 100 years of existence.
A Ladies’ Section was set up in 1926. Interestingly, Lady Members were required to be relatives of male club members. The first elected president of the Ladies’ Section was Mrs Torrance.
During World Wars One and Two, the Club actively supported the war efforts by, inter alia, raising money for the War Relief Funds.
Two Lady Members, Mary Torrance and Phyllis Galloway, and one Gent, Bryce Morrison, played for the Scottish National Bowling Team.
Archival material in the form of Monthly Minute Books (Reference GD247/1) for the period from 1905 to 1982 is held in East Dunbartonshire Archives. Mrs Janice Miller is the archivist at the William Patrick Library, Kirkintilloch, where the material can be accessed. The records are held in the library’s secure environmental safe-keeping, where, with permission, they can be inspected. Bishopbriggs Bowling Club is very grateful for the cooperation provided by the Archive Department of the Library.
